Humboldt Park Library & Reading Room

A 1,400-volume floor-to-ceiling perimeter library in quarter-sawn white oak with integrated radiator airflow channels and custom knurled brass hardware.

The Brief & Constraints

A 1912 Victorian parlor that would not tolerate generic cabinetry.

The client required housing for 1,400 rare volumes in a historic 1912 parlor room with original horsehair plaster walls and a cast-iron steam radiator occupying the primary south window bay.

Constraint 01 — Severe Plaster Wall Irregularity

Laser scans revealed the north wall was out of plumb by 1.85 inches over a 12-foot height. Conventional pre-built millwork would leave massive gaps or require clumsy quarter-round trim.

Constraint 02 — Radiator Heat Dissipation

Enclosing the radiator without an engineered convection chimney would warp solid timber shelves and bake antique book spines. Airflow had to be maintained without visible plastic louvers.

Constraint 03 — Narrow Stairwell Delivery Access

All vertical uprights exceeded 10 feet. The second-floor parlor could only be accessed via a narrow dogleg stairwell with a 29-inch clear door opening.

Technical Engineering

Shop drawings that solved the install before timber was cut.

Every component was drawn in 1:1 scale joinery cross-sections. We engineered custom mechanical mortises allowing the vertical uprights to assemble on site with hidden cam-bolts.

Radiator Convection Plenum

Concealed chimney channeling 220°F radiator exhaust through hidden brass shadow-line reveals, keeping bookshelf surfaces below 72°F.

Scribed Pilaster Tolerances

Field-scribed side panels contoured with CNC-machined reference points to match irregular 1912 plaster curves within 0.5mm.

The Outcome

Four days on site. Zero field alterations.

Because the joinery and scribe geometries were verified in CAD prior to shop cutting in Pilsen, the entire 22-linear-foot installation took exactly four working days with two craftsmen. No dust was generated from on-site table saws, preserving the historic home's finished floors.
